The Results Are In

The Friends of the Lorain Public Library, Inc. held a food drive throughout the month of January at the Main Library, accepting donations for either humans or pets. The drive resulted in 279 meals going to the Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio and $60 worth of pet food and pet supplies going to Friendship Animal Protective League in Elyria. “We are so very grateful to our Friends group and how their selfless acts of kindness and generosity help not only us here at the library but also others in the community,” said Jennifer Black, LPLS Director of Marketing. “We are lucky to have them.”

Getting the Most From Your Vegetable Garden: Wednesday, April 6; 6 to 7 p.m., North Ridgeville Branch – Do you want a vegetable garden but don’t know where to begin? Join Ohio State University Extension to learn the basics of vegetable gardening, from planning and seed selection through the planting and growing process. From a few containers to a garden in the backyard, learn about growing fresh, tasty produce. Preregistration required.

Beginner Pilates: Fridays, April 8, 15, 22, 29; 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Domonkas Branch – Posture is often the first thing people notice about a person, and those who carry themselves with poise display grace and confidence. This class will help teach the basic fundamentals of Pilates and establish proper form that will benefit you for a lifetime. Participants should bring a yoga mat or similar with them. Edible Flower Lollipops: Friday, April 8; 2 to 3 p.m., North Ridgeville Branch – Come and learn about edible flowers and how to make them into beautiful and delicious lollipops. Preregistration required.

Shred Day: Saturday, April 9; 9 a.m. to noon, Main Library – Each household may bring up to five standard‑size copier paper boxes or five grocery‑size bags of documents. Staples are fine, but no paper clips, binder clips, binders, spiral‑bound notebooks, other metal objects, batteries, or electronics. This free event is provided by the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District. The event may end early if the truck is full.

Eating the Rainbow: Monday, April 11; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., South Lorain Branch – A fun story and a creative art project will introduce children to the importance of eating a variety of fresh food. Fermented Sampler: Monday, April 11; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Domonkas Branch – Taste fermented foods and learn how these ancient edibles can affect the gut microbiome. Preregistration required.

Nature Story Time at the Miller Nature Preserve: Tuesday, April 12; 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. – Join Avon Branch staff for a special story time at the Miller Nature Preserve, then take a short discovery hike. Creepy Crawly Composting: Tuesday, April 12; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Domonkas Branch – Skip the landfill and compost your kitchen’s biodegradable food scraps at home. Learn about the basics of maintaining a vermicomposter, or worm farm, to create rich, natural fertilizer for your garden. Each family will make and take home their own mini‑composter with a wriggle of red worms. Dress for a mess! Preregistration required.
