Lorain County Public Health vaccinates 1,915 people ages 80+ against COVID-19

On Saturday, Jan. 23, Lorain County Public Health (LCPH) vaccinated 1,915 people ages 80+ against COVID-19. LCPH vaccinated at one walk-in and two drive-thru locations throughout Lorain County. These clinics were closed to people under age 80 in order to follow Ohio’s plan to prioritize people most likely to get very sick or hospitalized from COVID-19.

“We love to see this positive outpouring of interest in the vaccine from older adults in our community,” says LCPH Health Commissioner Dave Covell, MPH, RS. “They’re truly modeling the way for the rest of us going forward. This is the generation that knows how important vaccines are, since some of them may have lost friends to diseases like polio and measles before there was a vaccine.”

Clinics at all three locations ran smoothly. Cars at one drive-thru location were provided a list and asked to choose an alternate site due to a long line of traffic. “The entire country is facing this limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine right now,” explains Covell. “We’re looking forward to the next couple of months when supply will catch up with demand, and everyone who wants a vaccine can get one.”

Once LCPH receives more COVID-19 vaccine, they will schedule more clinics and invite groups according to Ohio’s vaccination plan. People may also view a list of local COVID-19 vaccine providers at http://bit.ly/lococovidvax. Each provider will follow Ohio’s phased approach for vaccine distribution. Each provider also manages its own schedules and appointments.

Continue taking steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from COVID-19. Stay home when sick, wash hands often. Wear a mask and keep six feet away from people you don’t live with.
