Giving Us Their Best

When a fire broke out at a North Ridgeville condominium complex last weekend, the call went out to Westcom (Westshore Central Dispatch Center) located within University Hospitals St. John Medical Center.

Westcom sends fire and EMS responders to 9-1-1 and emergency number calls in Bay Village, Fairview Park, North Ridgeville, Rocky River and Westlake and for mutual aid to other neighboring communities.

At the time of the North Ridgeville fire, all units in that city were busy. So Westcom responded with mutual aid from Westlake, Sheffield Village, Olmsted Township, Avon Lake, North Olmsted and Avon.

At the end of the day, 30 firefighters, including 21 from those providing mutual aid, responded to the Muirfield Village fire that started at 12:13 Friday afternoon. One occupant was sent to the hospital and no firefighters were injured in the kitchen fire that sent smoke throughout the complex.

The mutual aid response brought this comment from the North Ridgeville Fire Dept:

While we are always grateful for our mutual aid partners, we are especially grateful for the assistance we were able to receive this past Friday. At approximately 1213 hours, a reported structure fire on Greenwich Avenue came in to Westcom Fire Dispatch. At that time, all three of our crews were encumbered on three separate overlapping EMS incidents and were unable to initially respond. Westcom quickly filled our initial alarm and a subsequent first alarm with our mutual aid partners which consisted of Avon Firefighters Local 4310, Westlake Firefighters Local 1814, Sheffield Village Fire Department, Olmsted Township Fire Fighters, Avon Lake Firefighters and North Olmsted Firefighters. Every department has been experiencing an unprecedented increase in the number of calls and we are lucky that all of these departments had available crews to lend a hand. The fire was contained to the kitchen area of the fire occupancy with smoke damage to the main unit and water damage to the fire occupancy as well as an attached unit.

Figures provided by Westcom indicate that area fire departments are, indeed, busier than ever. Here are their run stats for the years 2020 and 2021:

  • Bay Village 1724 +14% vs ‘20 +11.4% vs ‘19
  • Fairview Park 2536 +14.1% vs ‘20 +5.7% vs ‘19
  • North Ridgeville 4638 +16.9% vs ‘20 +22.1 vs ‘19
  • Rocky River 3326 +9.4% vs ‘20 +4.3% vs ‘19
  • Westlake 6043 +16% vs ‘20 +9.9% vs 2019

2021 was a record setting year. We all owe Westcom and all our are fire departments and firefighter/paramedics a vote of thanks for all they do each and every day!
