Literary Trails Reopen

Spring means the reopening of literary trails! Lorain Public Library System posts the pages of a different children’s book along each trail every month from April through October inviting children and their caregivers to take a stroll through a beautiful local park while enjoying a story together. Our StoryWalks are located in South Central Park in North Ridgeville, Columbia Township Park in Columbia Station and Black River Landing in Lorain and our StoryBook Trail is at Every Child’s Playground in Avon.

Build a Poem: Friday, April 1 to Saturday, April 30, Avon Branch • Stop in and create your own poetry throughout April in honor of National Poetry Month. All ages welcome.

Maker‑in‑Residence Open Studio Hours: Tuesdays, April 26; May 3; 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Main Library • Stop in and visit with our current Maker‑In‑Residence, Carida Diaz, and learn about her techniques and methods as she designs, engraves, and cuts with the Glowforge in our Create Space.

ABCs of Art: Tuesday, April 26; 6 to 7 p.m., Domonkas Branch • Take a hands‑on approach to exploring the world of art history through a child’s eyes. Covering everything from well‑known painters like Van Gogh and Picasso to different art styles like Pop Art and Pointillism. School‑age children should come dressed to work with paint, clay, glue and other messy mediums. Preregistration required.

Tabletop Games Club: Tuesday, April 26; 6 p.m., Columbia Branch • Join us for a fun evening of card games and board games. Preregistration required.

Bring drafts of your work and be prepared to critique as well as have others review your writing. Preregistration required. Hybrid.

Columbia Fiber Arts Group: Thursdays, April 28; May 5; Noon to 4 p.m., Columbia Branch • For new and long‑time knitters and crocheters. If you have a “UFO” (an Unfinished Object) that you would like to work on with us, bring it or start something new!

Teen Anime Night: Thursdays, April 28; May 26; 6 to 7:30 p.m., Domonkas Branch • Join fellow fans for an evening of anime and light refreshments. Perfect for those in sixth to 12th grade. Preregistration required.

Maker‑In‑Residence Workshop: Introduction to Publishing Children’s Literature: Thursday, April 28; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., South Lorain Branch • Explore author Raquel M. Ortiz’s children’s literature and learn key concepts about the research and structure of a picture book. Create a book dummy and learn the importance of pacing, words and images. Preregistration required.

Beginner Pilates: Fridays, April 29; 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Domonkas Branch • Posture is often the first thing people notice about a person, and those who carry themselves with poise display grace and confidence. This class will help teach the basic fundamentals of Pilates and establish proper form that will benefit you for a lifetime. Participants should bring a yoga mat or similar with them. Preregistration required.

Story Time in the Woods: Fridays, April 29; May 13; 10:30 to 11 a.m., Every Child’s Playground, 36265 Detroit Road • Offered 2 Fridays per month April to October. Music, movement activities and play will accompany nature‑themed stories. Dress for the weather and bring a blanket. In case of inclement weather, this event will be canceled.

Let’s Zumba®!: Fridays, April 29; May 6, 13, 20, 27; 2 to 2:45 p.m., North Ridgeville Branch • Are you looking to jazz up your afternoons with an infectious dance? Break a sweat with Zumba®! Have fun and get fit as we dance to Latin beats! Preregistration required.

Shred Day: Saturday, April 30; 9 a.m. to noon, Columbia Branch • Each household may bring up to five standard‑size copier paper boxes or five grocery‑size bags of documents. Staples are fine, but no paper clips, binder clips, binders, spiral‑bound notebooks, other metal objects, batteries, or electronics. This free event is provided by the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District. The event may end early if the truck is full.

Musical Toolbox: Saturdays, April 30; July 9; 10:30 to 11 a.m., North Ridgeville Branch • Designed for children with disabilities and their families, this fun and engaging music program is conducted by a board‑certified music therapist from MTEC, the Music Therapy Enrichment Center. Caregivers will be given musical tools to use with their children outside of class. Preregistration required.

Food and Fun: Saturday, April 30; 11 a.m. to noon, Main Library and Domonkas Branch; Noon, South Lorain Branch • Children and teens age 18 and under are invited to join us for a boxed lunch and activities. Participants will also bring home a packaged set of ingredients and a recipe to share with their family. Preregistration required.

Information Station: Privacy and Security Online: Monday, May 2 to Tuesday, May 31, Avon Branch • Stop by the library to pick up resources about basic online privacy and security. Get tips on managing passwords, browsing anonymously and much more for the whole family.

Mother’s Day Cards: Monday, May 2 to Saturday, May 7, Columbia Branch • Stop in during regular hours to create a card for mom’s special day.

Superhero Scavenger Hunt: Monday, May 2 to Tuesday, May 31, Avon Branch • Kids can search the library for superheroes! Complete the scavenger hunt during the month of May to earn a small prize.

Mother’s Day Coupon Book: Monday, May 2; 6 to 7 p.m., South Lorain Branch • A fun project. resulting in the perfect Mother’s Day gift. Preregistration required.

Domonkas Friends General Membership Meeting: Tuesday, May 3; 6 to 7 p.m., Domonkas Branch • Join a fun group of other library enthusiasts who host book sales and volunteer at various programs in support of your beloved branch. Preregistration required. Hybrid

Gardening for Native Plants: Tuesday, May 3; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Columbia Branch; Thursday, May 5; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., South Lorain Branch • A slideshow lecture discussing how to garden with native Ohio plants, including maintenance and attracting wildlife, as well as resources on finding and choosing native plants. There will be short discussions on no‑mow grassless lawns, pollinator gardens and rain swales. Preregistration required.

Golden Grab Bag: Should I Stay or Should I Go?: Wednesday, May 4; 10 to 11 a.m., Domonkas Branch • Seniors, a series of programs just for you! Join Mary Molnar from Senior Care Authority for an in‑depth discussion on senior living and care options and ways to pay for them. Preregistration required.

Nacho Night for Teens and Tweens: Wednesday, May 4; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., North Ridgeville Branch • Enjoy an open nacho bar and learn how to make a simple salsa recipe. Intended for teens and tweens age 9 and up. Preregistration required.

Pajama Story Time: Wednesdays, May 4, 18; 7 p.m., South Lorain Branch • Put on your PJs, grab your favorite stuffed animal and meet us for a bedtime storytime. We’ll share books, rhymes, and songs to help you settle down for the night so you’re ready to drift off to sleep. Pajamas are encouraged, but not required. Preregistration required. Browser’s Reading Buddies: Saturdays, May 7; June 4; July 2; Aug. 6; 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., North Ridgeville Branch • Children ages 5 to 10 sit and read to a therapy dog for a 15 minute session. Call the library at 440‑327‑8326 to register.

Anime Amigurumi for Tweens and Teens: Saturday, May 7; 2 to 3 p.m., Main Library • Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small yarn creatures and characters. Join us to learn how to read amigurumi crochet patterns and create a famous anime character. Familiarity with basic crochet stitches is recommended, but all necessary crochet techniques will be reviewed during the program. All crochet supplies are provided. Preregistration required.

V.I.P. Afternoon Tea: Saturday, May 7; 2 to 3 p.m., North Ridgeville Branch • Enjoy light refreshments while we play games and make crafts all while making memories with the ones we love.
