On Tuesday, July 26, 2022 Lorain County Public Health (LCPH) hosted a family farm market. Attendees bought fresh fruits and vegetables from three local farms, enjoyed games and learned about LCPH services. The WIC program, a supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children, also distributed $30 produce vouchers to 176 WIC families.
“Eating fresh fruits and vegetables helps support a healthy lifestyle, plus it helps prevent chronic diseases,” said Mark Adams, MPH, REHS, health commissioner at LCPH. “Additionally, buying from local farmers helps support the local economy. These WIC produce vouchers alone put $5,280 back into the local economy.”
The participating farmers included Grobe Fruit Farm, Fenik’s Farm Market and Solidarity Urban Farms. If WIC families still need to pick up their produce vouchers, they may visit Lorain County Health & Dentistry, 1205 Broadway Ave. in Lorain on Aug. 9, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. For more pickup times and locations, visit LorainCountyHealth.com/wic.
Four Lorain County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteered at the family farm market. They provided games and education on healthy eating and active living. The MRC needs medical and non-medical volunteers to help at community events and in case of a public health emergency.
