The Lorain Public Library System was honored to receive a donation of over 50 refurbished fishing poles from Cabela’s.
North Ridgeville Branch Manager Jennifer Winkler contacted the Avon store about purchasing fishing equipment to be loaned to patrons. Their knowledgeable staff assisted by suggesting the most durable and age-appropriate equipment.
The purchased fishing poles will be available for checkout at the North Ridgeville Branch in Fall and include two Bass Pro Shops Fish Stiks Spincast Rod and Reel Combos for preschool-age children, two ProFISHiency Splattered Micro Spincast Combos for young school-age children, two Zebco 33 Spincast Combos for tweens and four Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Rod and Reel Combo for teens and adults. In addition, families can also checkout tackles boxes, lures and life jackets.
Adults ages 18 and older can check out a family set of fishing poles for the day with their CLEVNET library card.
Circulating fishing poles help the library fulfill its mission to connect our communities to experiences that enrich and inspire. This service will allow families to fish freely, build lasting memories without the need to purchase expensive equipment and introduce a new generation to the joys of fishing.
“Fishing allows caregivers to model patience, communication, problem-solving and healthy lifestyle choices,” Winkler said. “It is a sport that provides an opportunity to have conversations about the importance of getting outdoors, actively communicating and understanding the importance of taking care of the environment.”
South Central Park is located directly across the street from the North Ridgeville Branch and features a catch and release fishing pond, which the city owns and maintains so no fishing license is needed. This is one of the few public locations in Lorain County where a fishing license is not required.
Before the first checkout, patrons must present a valid photo ID and complete a Circulating Fishing Pole Waiver. Fishing poles must be returned by closing time each day. Replacement costs for fishing poles are $50 and $25 for tackle boxes.
As a result of the additional equipment provided by Cabela’s generation donation, the library will host a Family Fishing Fun event where participants will rotate through stations to learn basic fishing skills through interactive, hands-on activities; and families will receive one of the refurbished fishing poles while supplies last.

The Family Fishing Fun event will be held this fall or next spring. Once finalized, it will be included in the online calendar.
