The gymnasiums at North Ridgeville Academic Center recently transformed into a lively hub of real-world scenarios—a bustling newsroom, a local restaurant, and even a doctor’s office—all designed to help 7th grade students master essential social skills like speaking, active listening, and maintaining eye contact.
This interactive event, known as The Amazing Shake, is now in its fourth year and continues to be a highlight of the school calendar. It’s more than just a competition; it’s a hands-on learning experience that equips students with skills they’ll use far beyond the classroom.
Structured as a fast-paced, gauntlet-style challenge, students rotate through 12 unique stations, each designed to test their communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal abilities. Stations include a candid interview, a conversation circle, NRCS news reporting, self-advocacy scenarios, ordering at a restaurant, and scheduling a doctor’s appointment. Judged by a mix of staff and community members, students are encouraged to think on their feet and present their best selves in every interaction.
Preparation for The Amazing Shake begins months before the event. Teachers integrate social skill-building into their lessons through workshops and tailored assignments, ensuring students feel confident and prepared when it’s time to step into these real-life roles.
The competition unfolds over four exciting rounds, culminating in May when four standout students will be named winners. But the impact doesn’t end there—each winner earns a $500 donation to a nonprofit of their choice, generously provided by local community sponsors.
Event organizer Kellie Slabodnick reflects on the broader impact of the program: “We love how this event makes such an impact on both our students and the community. We found a way to encourage our kids to learn essential life skills while also supporting local charities. This event truly bridges the gap between the schools and the community.”
The Amazing Shake is more than just a competition—it’s a community-driven initiative that empowers students, builds confidence, and fosters a spirit of giving back.
