Lorain Public Library System Calendar

Notice about hours: Sunday, May 29 is the last Sunday our North Ridgeville and South Lorain Branches will be open for the season. They will resume their Sunday hours in the fall. All branches of the Lorain Public Library System will be closed on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day.

Information Station: Privacy and Security Online: Monday, May 2 to Tuesday, May 31; Avon Branch • Stop by the library to pick up resources about basic online privacy and security. Get tips on managing passwords, browsing anonymously and much more for the whole family.

Superhero Scavenger Hunt: Monday, May 2 to Tuesday, May 31; Avon Branch • Kids can search the library for superheroes! Complete the scavenger hunt during the month of May to earn a small prize.

Nature Story Time: Tuesday, May 17; 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.; Miller Nature Preserve • Join Avon Branch staff for a special story time at the Miller Nature Preserve, then take a short discovery hike. If there is inclement weather we will do an alternate activity. Register both caregiver and child at https://reservations.metroparks.cc/programs/.

Maker‑in‑Residence Open Studio Hours: Tuesdays, May 17, 24, 31; 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Main Library • Stop in and visit with our current Maker‑In‑Residence, Carida Diaz, and learn about her techniques and methods as she designs, engraves, and cuts with the Glowforge in our Create Space.

ABCs of Art: Tuesday, May 17; 6 to 7 p.m.; Domonkas Branch • Take a hands‑on approach to exploring the world of art history through a child’s eyes. Covering everything from well‑known painters like Van Gogh and Picasso to different art styles like Pop Art and Pointillism. School‑age children should come dressed to work with paint, clay, glue and other messy mediums. Preregistration required.

Keith Haring Art for Kids: Wednesday, May 18; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Main Library • Learn about the iconic art of Keith Haring in this art project for kids. Kids will make figures in motion with colorful backgrounds like Keith Haring’s graffiti style figures. Preregistration required.

Pajama Story Time: Wednesday, May 18; 7 p.m.; South Lorain Branch • Put on your PJs, grab your favorite stuffed animal and meet us for a bedtime storytime. We’ll share books, rhymes, and songs to help you settle down for the night so you’re ready to drift off to sleep. Pajamas are encouraged, but not required. Preregistration required. Hybrid.

Maker‑In‑Residence Workshop: Multimedia Storytelling Part 1: Thursday, May 19; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; South Lorain Branch • Create a puppet theater adaptation of author Raquel M. Ortiz’s book, “When Julia Danced the Bomba,” celebrating literacy, songs, dance, community and Afro Puerto culture. This two‑part workshop will cover creating scripts, lyrics, music, dance routines, scenery and props. Preregistration required.

Beginner Pilates: Friday, May 20; 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; Domonkas Branch • Posture is often the first thing people notice about a person, and those who carry themselves with poise display grace and confidence. This class will help teach the basic fundamentals of Pilates and establish proper form that will benefit you for a lifetime. Participants should bring a yoga mat or similar with them. If you have a “UFO” (an Unfinished Object) that you would like to work on with us, bring it or start something new!

Shred Day: Saturday, May 21; 9 a.m. to noon; Sheffield Lake City Hall • Each household may bring up to five standard‑size copier paper boxes or five grocery‑size bags of documents. Staples are fine, but no paper clips, binder clips, binders, spiral‑bound notebooks, other metal objects, batteries or electronics. This free event is provided by the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District. The event may end early if the truck is full.

Story Time in the Woods: Friday, May 27; 10:30 to 11 a.m.; Every Child’s Playground, 36265 Detroit Road • Offered 2 Fridays per month April to October. Music, movement activities and play will accompany nature‑themed stories. Dress for the weather and bring a blanket. Weather permitting.

Eating the Rainbow: Saturday, May 28; 2 to 3 p.m.; Domonkas Branch • A fun story and a creative art project will introduce children to the importance of eating a variety of fresh food. We will learn about the health benefits and vibrant flavors of different colored fruits and vegetables. Preregistration required.

Summer Lunch for Kids: Beginning Tuesday, May 31; 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the South Lorain Branch; 1 to 2 p.m. at the Main Library • The Lorain Public Library System is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Ages 18 and under are invited to come to lunch Monday through Friday all summer long, with the exception of Monday, July 4 when the branches are closed.

Friends of the Lorain Public Library, Inc. Meeting: Tuesday, May 31; 5 to 6 p.m.; South Lorain Branch • Join a fun group of library enthusiasts who host book sales and volunteer at various programs in support of our beloved branch.

Grab & Go Bags: Avon Branch • Throughout the month, the Avon Branch will off a variety of Grab & Go crafts and activities for every age range for you to enjoy at home. Stop in during regular library hours and see what we have for you!
