Matthew P. Spears (38) of Avon Lake has announced his candidacy for Lorain County Commissioner. His petition filed on December 19th with the Lorain County Board of Elections is for the full term seat commencing January 3, 2025 that is currently held by Lorain County Commissioner David J. Moore.

Mr. Spears is running as a Republican and currently is the Administrative Assistant to Lorain County Commissioner Michelle Hung. He has been serving the residents of Lorain County in his current position and wishes to serve the residents in a larger capacity as a County Commissioner. Matthew is a strong supporter of the rights of organized labor.

Matthew has a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration, Safety, and Security, and a Bachelor of Arts in Public Safety Management with an emphasis in Homeland Security. He also has two (2) Professional Development Certificates from Lorain County Community College in Public Administration and in Police Science.

Mr. Spears’ experience includes thirteen (13) years in auxiliary law enforcement with an additional two (2) years in federal service. He is a member of F.O.P.A Lodge #46, Sons of the American Legion Post #211, the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, and Black River Lodge #786 Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio. Mr. Spears is continuing his support of public service by attending the EHOVE Career Center Volunteer Fire Academy in January 2024.

His platform is based on reestablishing a positive relationship between the residents of Lorain County and county government, including the first responder community. Matthew understands that ensuring the safety, security and welfare of the residents of Lorain County is one of the primary responsibilities of county government, and decisions made by county officials should be based on the input and best interest of the residents they represent. Mr. Spears strongly believes there is no room for personal agendas in government, and it should operate on the concepts of “government of the people, by the people, and for the people” – President Abraham Lincoln.

Mr. Spears’ experience, professionalism, and character will return the county resident’s trust in the Office of County Commissioner, as well as the Republican Party.
