Georgia, On My Mind: The Luck of the Irish

Monthly thoughts from Councilwoman at Large Georgia Awig

Since it is March and St. Patrick’s Day happens every year on March 17, I am reminded of the phrase, “the luck of the Irish”. When we say that phrase it implies that good things are brought to a person because of luck rather than knowledge, hard work, or skill. Sometimes that is true.

Last night I won a raffle basket and definitely it was luck and nothing else that caused me to win that gift. In some instances, people just happen to be in the right place at the right time. More often people have what they have because of the time and effort they have spent doing the right things in life. I am talking about spending years getting educated and then years working hard so that one can have the life that he/she loves.

It is great when the person enjoys the journey which I feel I have done. I have spent many years, more than most of you probably, to get to this point in my life. I have a flexible schedule and I can make decisions based on whether or not I want to do the activity, not on whether I can afford it. I sure don’t want anyone to think it is because of “the luck of the Irish”. After all, I am not even Irish and it sure wasn’t luck that got me to where I am today. As they say, it was a lot of “blood, sweat and tears”!

Just wondering, do you have “the luck of the Irish”. If not, what are you doing today to have the life you deserve in the later years of your life?
